Themed cafes typically have shorter shelf lives, depending on the longevity of the character that their food revolves around. Kumoya Singapore tries to angle this somewhat differently; while riding on the revival of Miffy - the rabbit which surprisingly existed before Hello Kitty, in Singapore as well as positioning itself in the heart of the Kampong Glam conservation district and getting its full halal certification, something that not many themed cafes can offer.

the cafe itself of course centers around Miffy, with plush figurines of the bunny in various sizes being found all over the store. customers could pose for pictures with them, practically dine with them, or even include them in their Instagram shots. alot of Miffy merchandise are also available for sale, from the giant plush to smaller items like coasters and key chains. Quite certainly, the food are all presented with everyone's favourite bunny in different forms.

We went for their signature main dish called the Splashing Good Fun Japanese seafood curry rice. the rice is moulded into the shape of Miffy and served with various breaded seafood as well as Japanese curry. nothing fancy, but just the most thematic of all the main courses served here. we also tried the Egg-citing Miffy smoked duck cold pasta which was actually the tastier dish, but other than a Miffy boiled egg, this dish doesn't quite have a unique design to it. seems like we ought to go for form over substance in this instance..

the dessert choices all exude cuteness that probably makes this family restaurant a hit with the social media junkies. This Bellylicious Belgian chocolate lava cake comes in a package of cotton candy, Hokkaido soft serve, a Miffy cookie and a molten lava cake. probably the most value for money of the desserts. Cotton candy seems like a recurring concept used for the popular desserts and we also had a Miffy original orange soda that has a huge Miffy cotton-ball on top of it. while the desserts are balls of fun, a big let-down was the organization of the service crew - who couldn't handle the concept of desserts being served later. so you either have got to receive your mains and desserts all at once, or you'd have to go again to order your desserts after you're done with your mains. how silly..

in all, this thematic cafe is a series of hits and misses. certainly a must-visit for Miffy fans and a cosy hang-out for families with young children. the halal-certification is also a plus as this makes them more inclusive in Singapore's multi-racial community. for the neutrals, the food is rather pricey and pretty much average. the whole idea of handling the desserts was also quite silly, especially when they were quite amply staffed on the day we visited. i guess, once for the experience is what this place is about - unless you're a big fan.

a cafe that is located away from everything else requires strong word-of-mouth referrals and a ton of social media sharing. and a hipster cafe that has earned the approval of our friend who'd prefer local hawker food to cafe food any day deserves special mention. located at Morse Road in Telok Blangah, at the foot of Mount Faber, concept of this cafe is pretty much a pasta and burger place. there's brunch offering and craft beers as well, so there's certainly something for everyone..

the exterior of the cafe (once you find it) looks kind of like a heartland public housing shop, but the interior sports a clean-cut, Scandinavian themed design that is brightly lit and perfect for a chill-out afternoon. the menu is largely a Western offering, but includes tastes of Asian food such as curry and Tomyum flavours. the store is alot busier in the afternoons than in the evenings, probably implying that their brunch menu caters more to the lunch crowds.

we tried the Chilli Double Crab pasta which includes crab meat mixed with pasta in a creamy chilli crab sauce. one unique thing to mention is that several of the pasta dishes use either Fettucini or Pappardelle pasta, which is something different from most places. the pasta is really good, with the creamy sauce giving that ample spicy kick. we also tried the Fettucini Carbonara that was not too creamy and had a generous serving of bacon. the pastas gave us the confidence and the curiosity, to try the Tomyum pasta on the next visit..

there are other mains as well, with another crab dish being one of their signatures. this soft-shell crab curry is essentially toast, potatoes, tomatoes and a pair of soft-shell crabs immersed in a pot of curry. the curry is actually quite flavourful, but somehow, the dish somewhat felt like a starter more than a mains. the recent inclusion of some American dishes are perhaps more welcome, where we totally enjoyed the honey baby-back ribs that was juicy yet tender.

i kinda learnt a classic lesson in upsell marketing for the drinks, when i noticed that most tables would have ordered at least one of their signature Fuel Ice Teas. it's literally iced tea albeit a little pricey, but that's what happens when you take something normal and repackage it. i went for the bottled beers instead and found my favourite Hawaiian Great White beer. not many places have this, so that was a welcome surprise. in all, Fuel Plus may be a little out of the way, but it has a pretty strong menu with some well done dishes. A very homely chill-out place indeed.
