The anniversary comes around Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day for us so it was going to be a challenge to find a place that was memorable and offered great value for our celebration. We did some scouting and eventually came across an afternoon tea offering that was absolutely worth it. Colony at the Ritz Carlton Millenia is a restaurant that showcases Asian dishes of Singapore's colonial past. Its afternoon tea menu not only carries a good spread but is also very reasonably priced for the things they offer. It was no question that we came out of our special day feeling very satisfied.

there is also a great sense of arrival stepping into the Ritz Carlton. the high ceilings with natural light made the backdrop very bright and perfect for taking good photos. Colony itself was nicely fitted out to give that picturesque ambience to enjoy afternoon tea. The meal is coined The Journey, to celebrate Singapore's heritage and the savoury dishes are stacked in a classic 5-tier Tingkat or tiffin containers. the sweets are available at the pastry counters in unlimited supply and there's even ice-cream, candy and traditional Nonya Kuehs to choose from.

not to mention, the set kicks off with a choice of champagne or Prosecco to get you into the mood for a lovely afternoon. We went for the Prosecco where we had a choice of Raspberry or Lemongrass. the serving of spirits are already in the afternoon set menu and no top-up is required to enjoy the starter drinks. thereafter, visitors can enjoy either a unique house blended tea or a cup of coffee to accompany their food. the staff at Colony are all very knowledgeable and it was evident that everyone was very passionate about serving their customers.

great spread of 5 savoury dishes when the tiffin containers arrived. every dish had distinct local flavours and spices but were all expertly fused with more continental ingredients. in particular, we enjoyed the Potted Chilli Crab served with Sambal Lavosh, the lobster sandwich and "Dragon Beard" stuffed Crustacean. although there was just one serving of each dish for us, the range was ample and left us with the right amount of tummy space to go for the desserts. every dish was also delicately presented and were extremely flavourful.

the sweet servings were unlimited, we could take as many cakes and mousses that we could finish from this rack. on top of these, there were also a selection of miniature Nonya Kuehs or traditional Peranakan pastries that was available as well. the Asian favourites were popular with the patrons and there were times when people had to wait for the containers to be topped up. to cap off the dessert section, chocolate pralines, cookies and candies were also available together with a fairly wide variety of ice-cream choices. it truly made the afternoon tea great value for money and for us, one of the most memorable high-teas to date.

Pince & Pints

There are not many restaurants specialising in lobsters in Singapore, to the point that many of us got excited when London chain Burger & Lobster announced that they'd be opening at Jewel Changi Airport. However long before all this, there has been an eatery in Duxton that serves up lobster dishes and has been attracting queues for it. a winner of several Restaurant Association of Singapore awards, Pince and Pints has been attracting lobster lovers since 2014, priding itself for serving up fresh lobster dishes directly imported from the Atlantic Coast such as Boston and Canada.

taking up a couple of shop-house units along Duxton Road, the restaurant has limited seating which explains its queues even on weekdays. reservations are strongly encouraged and arriving early due to the limited parking in the area would be a good tip for drivers. the menu is pretty simple, with a selection of about 8 main types of lobster dishes. expect the meals to be a tad pricey, ranging from $58++ to $68++ although families would be heartened to note that a kids menu is available too. This has not stopped patrons from visiting Pince and Pints though, with the chain now having a second outlet in Katong and also stores in Malaysia.

It's all about the Lobster Roll isn't it? We decided that it is a must-try since it is the dish that defines every lobster shack globally. the dish comes with a hotdog bun stuffed with fresh chunky lobster meat drizzled with mayonnaise and chives, together with a salad, fries and its signature garlic butter sauce. The thing that blows people away when they try this dish is the freshness of the lobsters, it is probably also one of the more unique sandwich meals, considering we don't get many lobster rolls here. the dish can be served classic style like above, or also with Nonya chilli or wasabi sauce.

For a more Asian variant, there is the Black Pepper Lobster that we went for. this is essentially a whole lobster slit into 2 and immersed into a claypot of black pepper sauce. To make the experience more complete, the dish can be served with fried mantou or jasmine rice, works the same for the Chilli (crab sauce) Lobster dish as well. Singaporeans love their seafood in black pepper or tomato-chilli sauce and the one served here was totally on point. the fresh lobster becoming extremely flavourful after being immersed in the black pepper sauce. something of a little miss for our visit was that some of the pincers of the whole lobsters were not fully cracked, and it took some effort from our guys at the dining table. probably not what you'd expect from an upscale lobster joint.

another interesting dish that we tried were the Lobster Noodles. This was essentially wok fried egg noodles served with a whole lobster in a special gravy. this was somewhat of a busy dish considering it was all served on one plate which made the noodles a little damp after awhile. Probably an interesting variation for a second visit, but we'd recommend the classic dishes if you're a first timer here. Of course, the restaurant fulfills its "Pints" element fully with its wide selection of drinks, there's even a bar counter for those coming in simply for bar bites and alcohol. from a variety of wines, cocktails, ciders and beers, there is certainly a great choice of drinks that would go well with lobsters, a perfect place for gatherings and celebrations, or when you'd wanna have something special.
