with Christmas just around the corner, we hope that everyone is in a feasting mode of some sort. Especially with this year's festivities spreading over an extended long weekend, it is the perfect moment to wine, dine and be merry. one thought is that you could visit the latest outlet of this fast-growing Singaporean cafe chain that just opened its doors at Raffles City. along with its wide spread menu with almost something for everyone, PS. Cafe is definitely gaining lots of ground in the last couple of years.

with its 7th outlet and counting, the latest PS. Cafe at Raffles City is an iconic spectacle. Taking a double-volume space on the once quiet common area on its third floor, the greenhouse themed designer structure is an ideal place for dates, gatherings and just to people-watch. along with the brand's ethos to make their cafes a "refuge for social gatherings", every one of their outlets come with a wide choice of mains, sandwiches, pastas, sides and drinks to give all visitors something to choose from.

sometimes, having a big menu has its drawbacks, because it makes people undecided. so anyway, we will introduce the no-brainer signature that everyone tends to order here first - the PS. truffle shoestring fries. in fact, they are so good at it that people now associate truffle fries with PS. Cafe. the few times we tried this set dish, the fries always came warm, well-cut and with loads of truffle and cheese.

the other dishes are a series of hits and misses, and after some time, regulars would go for their own favourites. more popular pasta choices include this Chicken Rossa Penne and the spicy king prawn Aglio Olio. the penne is served in a garlic-tomato cream sauce, topped with grilled chicken, smoked bacon, spinach, mushrooms and sprinkles of Parmesan cheese. alongside the Aglio Olio, the pastas here come in generous servings, have an aromatic dash of spices and ample ingredients. it is also interesting to note that the menu indicates which dishes are suitable for vegetarians, or can be modified to cater for vegetarians.

the main dishes are a little more tricky, as we haven't really heard mention of a standout dish. in actual fact, the conventional types such as beer-battered fish & chips or BBQ ribs are probably the better ones. we tried this more inventive interpretation of a chicken Parmigiano that is supposed to be chicken breast, toasted garlic ciabatta bread, topped with greens and a chunky tomato sauce. however, the food seems to be overly hard and somewhat difficult to chew down. someone else ordered buttermilk fried chicken, which turned out somewhat like KFC served with barbecue sauce. so like we said, hits and misses. in all, the PS. Cafe brand is expanding rapidly and have maintained their high standards of design and ambience. the wide menu spread serves up some bizarre dishes of acquired taste, but their signatures always ensures that they remain a local favourite.

We've long heard about a shophouse along Upper Thomson serving Thai street-style dishes and better yet, specialising in the increasingly popular Thai instant "Mama" noodles. long suffering along with other food establishments in the area from the never-ending construction work for the Thomson-East Coast MRT line, we decided to brave the erratic November weather to give this restaurant a try.

with a revamped and expressive Instagrammable shop interior, affordably priced menu and colourful drinks, the concept targets the younger millennial crowd. probably an interesting adaptation to keep up with a competitive Thai cuisine market in Singapore, considering the concept prided itself with traditional street-style Thai food from the 1970s. at dinner peak hours, the crowd is comparable to the more illustrious enterprises such as Aloy Thai and Nakhon Kitchen, and for us, the standout point were some unique dishes that they carried on their menu..

The specialty dish would be their Signature claypot Tomyum Mama, essentially a pot full of ingredients such as pork, prawns, squids, poached egg served with instant Mama noodles in a Tomyum broth. the rich mixture of flavours and good variety makes this good comfort food for about 2 people. in a group, you'd probably have to share this along side other dishes that the restaurant whips up. we went for Thai spicy Kang Kong and homemade meatballs to accompany our main dish.

other iconic Thai food is probably a must-try in order to compare with other restaurants. the green curry chicken was strong in spices and went well with steamed rice. it was also considerably a fairly large bowl for a very reasonable price. another popular dish that was recommended was this bowl of steamed squids in spicy chilli and lime broth. the sweet and sour effect with a tinge of spice somehow blended well with the otherwise plain steamed squids, adding to the flavours of our spread. the servings for all dishes were ample and they were served pretty quickly as well.

in all, we enjoyed a hearty spread that brought out the cornucopia of flavours that makes Thai cuisine so distinctly different. pair it with a good dose of Thai milk tea or Chang beer and you'd have a good feast. perhaps the cold weather outside made everything feel more homely and tasty, but we certainly found Tomyum Mama comparable to any of the other more popular Thai restaurants that Singaporeans would queue for. We hope the construction hoardings around them will come down soon, the places gets more accessible, so that more people can enjoy a dose of comfort treats.
