We were house hunting and checking out a potential new hood in Hougang when we decided to check out Ci Yuan Community Centre. The building is connected to one of the newer hawker centres in Singapore which served as an incubator for aspiring young hawkers. Within the Community Centre itself, Ci Yuan is proving to be quite a hipster chill out place thanks to the arrival of SOD Cafe. the business owners has made it one of the go-to cafes in Hougang with its unique interpretation of western food and drinks.

the people behind SOD Cafe first started out as a bubble tea shop, expanding now to a full menu of western dishes, the signatures of this place are still its eye-catching drinks and unique pastas. the dishes are affordably priced and there is no service charge nor taxes at the store. there are special promotions for students as well, hence making it a popular hang out place for the Hougang millennials and families alike.

With its background specialising in bubble tea, it is no wonder that they have a selection of interesting drinks. we found this Ice Lemonade particularly Instagram friendly with its multiple colours and mini ice cubes creating good contrast. We also tried its signature Tan Milk Tea with white pearls which turned out to be an interesting combination not just for its black-and-white look, but the black sesame taste infused in the milk tea proved to be refreshing mixture as well.

Pastas are the cafe's other specialty and we went ahead to try its much advertised Tom Yum Spaghetti. served with seafood and chilli slices in a creamy Tom Yum sauce, the dish really has the right kicks for spicy food lovers. Another interesting pasta dish that we planned to check out on our next visit would be the Smoked Duck Spaghetti, which we saw other patrons having. The dish served with thin duck slices, bonito flakes and a poached egg appeared to be extremely mouth watering.

the other food mains come with a pretty unique twist as well. We tried this pizza inspired Chicken Supreme, which was essentially a chicken thigh served with melted cheese (with prawns) and potato gratin beneath. the combination felt like eating into a chicken supreme pizza and certainly gave new perspective to the interpretation of chicken chop. Customers can top off their visit with a range of cakes, tarts and waffles for dessert. We tried their Charcoal Waffles with vanilla ice cream which was served warm and nice. If Hougang really becomes home for us, we'd forsee ourselves visit SOD cafe alot more often.
