The North region doesn't get many hipster cafes since people who'd travel that far tend to head straight up to neighbouring Johor Bahru already. so it definitely has something new to cheer about since events caterer and value cafe operator Fusion Spoon opened up its latest outlet in Woodlands. we happened to be around the area last weekend and chanced upon this unique self-serving cafe.

tucked amongst the heartland shops within a fairly new public housing precinct in Woodlands, the cafe is designed with bright spacious interiors and a very photogenic garden theme. a pair of wings make up the feature wall at the entrance, which serves as a photo opportunity for many patrons. the menu here focuses on very affordable pricing and carries a wide range from Western food, local delights to even Korean Bingsu. the self-collection queue numbering system can get really busy on weekend peaks, and long waiting times for the food can be expected.

Probably the most affordable full Hawaiian Pizza we have ever tried. there were ample servings of ham and pineapple chunks, with the cheese well melted, making it a pretty good interpretation of a thin-crust pizza overall. there are a few other pizza selections, including local ingredients like Otah, which we made a mental note to try during our next visit.

The cafe also offered many types of pastas and baked rice. we went for this Seafood Marinara that came in fairly generous portions of tomato based spaghetti served with cuttlefish, squids and prawns. generally no frills stuff but its strong on taste and under $10, we think its a steal. there are lots of other cream based and aglio olio based pastas on the menu, and given their competitive pricing, we'd expect residents to pop by frequently for a dinner treat.

we topped off our meals with very colourful drinks. Mango smoothie and green-apple soda, refreshing thirst quencher that is also perfect for the camera. in all, we thought that Fusion Spoon creates a relaxed atmosphere for the local community to dine in. we actually found them quite organized in handling our orders and we were lucky enough not to experience the long waits that some encountered during weekend peaks. in any case, if you are making a trip specially to check them out, do come early.

Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe

Seletar Aerospace Park is slated to be the home of Singapore's aviation facilities. From housing a now private airport, to having several industries manufacturing and maintaining aircraft engines and parts, as well as several aerospace R&D facilities. Also, as part of the Nation's efforts to clean up the area for light industrial uses and to preserve its colonial heritage, the area has been now curated to transform several old buildings into public spaces and eateries.

Soek Seng Bicycle Cafe is located within a hangar-like aircraft consultancy building. It is adjacent to the runway where people can watch planes take-off and blessed with low-height structures of the airport environment, allowing people to catch sunset from the comfort of their seats. The cafe itself its operated by a vintage bicycle collector and represents one of the very few bike cafes in Singapore. Vintage vehicles and a unique biker interior gives the place several photo-opportunities as well.

The menu is generally pub-grub with western dishes, cakes, cafe drinks and bottled beers. we actually found the food to be of fairly good quality, like this serving of Chicken Chop where the chicken was juicy, well marinated and flame-grilled to perfection. there was also a certain crispy texture of the meat, giving it greater meal satisfaction. Japanese rice bowls (Dons) are also a popular choice here, for those who cannot go a day without rice.

Another unique offering would be the selection of burgers! This Double Cheese Chicken Burger is certainly tops simply because of its similar flame-grilled tenderness, the flavour and the abundance of cheese. there's also a small side serving of bbq ranch flavoured potato chips, alongside salad and some fries. pretty much a no frills affair but turned out as tasty as it was simplistic. We accompanied the mains with coffee and both the chilled or warm version turned out okay.

In all, a very Instagrammable cafe in an interesting bicycle shop setting, with good lighting to create photo moments. the food quality for the flame grilled dishes were good and patrons could also enjoy a cold beer in an al-fresco setting in the evenings - while watching planes taxi by. the place is still rather quaint and the overall laid-back feel makes the cafe the perfect location for a weekend escape from the city.

Blue Willow

there are several gimmicky concepts within thematic restaurants in Singapore, with most of them revolving around animated characters or a costumed theme. and in this ever saturated industry of quirky dining concepts, we managed to discover a themed restaurant that stood out not just for the effort and consistency in delivering the idea, but more importantly, the quality of its food as well.

Blue Willow is located along Clementi Road, near the Kent Ridge bus interchange and famous for its nearby prata shops that almost all NUS students would have fond memories of. the restaurant prides itself for being the only blue themed restaurant in Singapore. everything here from the fit out, to the lighting and the natural ingredients used to prepare the dishes includes an element of punchy blue colours. The Western-fusion cuisine served up here is generally on point, and the clever use of blue colours add to its photogenic quality.

The starting inspiration of this cafe would be its blue wine. Probably one of the few places to serve up the Spanish Gik brand - the wine is a natural blue colour made from the skin of grapes used at the vineyard. the sweet taste of the drink makes it extremely palatable to wash down and over at Blue Willow, it is a popular choice that can either be chosen by the bottle or by each glass. with this joint being operated by the same group of young entrepreneurs behind Platform 1094 (the wizardry themed cafe), do ask for any other colour changing cocktails that may not be on the menu.

in terms of their standout main dishes, we enjoyed this serving of the Blue Willow's Barramundi, a flame grilled fish dish that was already fragrant when served. decked with beetroot, baby spinach and splashed with blue mustard cream sauce, we enjoyed the freshness and tender texture of the fish. The other main dish that we ordered, the Grilled pork loin, was also very juicy and well accompanied by a generous serving of zucchini, eggplant pesto, mashed potatoes and mayo sauce. under the blue lights of the restaurant, the mains are as Instagrammable as they are tasty.

the desserts here are another "attraction" by themselves. Needless to say, the cakes are in bright blue colours. we picked the Blue Velvet cake and this dome shaped mousse-like cake called Tea by Lupicia. We particularly enjoyed the latter, because we simply love sweet stuff, and the chocolate mousse infused in tea and a tinge of Gik wine makes it one refreshing dessert. All in all, we found our visit truly experiential dining. from being able to interact with the colour-changing cocktails, to the discovery of blue dishes and their distinct natural tastes to enjoying desserts in the al-fresco backyard of blue, we rate this as one of the best thematic restaurant experiences we had in recent time.
